Ian Donald

Born in Aberdeen in 1936, an early fascination with pencil and brush was developed in the late 40’s early 50’s by the wonderfully eccentric Charles “the Bush” Hemingway at Aberdeen Grammar School.

A good Art Higher almost lead to Art School but, instead he chose a career in public health which took him, for many years, to Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia. During this period, painting was, to say the least, sporadic, and it wasn’t until the late 90’s that he revived his interest.

His favoured medium is watercolour. Besides allowing him to work quickly, which suits his impatient nature, he feels that it most effectively expresses the transient feeling of light, especially in landscapes, his main subject.

His work has been described as showing “a delicate and thoughtful approach with great atmospheric qualities”.

More recently he has been experimenting with acrylics for a variety of subjects, most notably – and successfully – large flower paintings.

He is a regular exhibitor at events and galleries in the North East and his paintings have found homes in Canada, America, Norway, Italy and throughout the UK.
