Over the years I attended lots of classes, in particular at Grays School of Art.  I retired recently after spending 40 years in the IT industry and now have lots of time to spend painting.

I work in Oils, using strong colour and love to paint landscapes and still life.  Recently I have been painting landscapes local to Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire and these have proved to be very popular. I also produce cards and prints and undertake commissions.

I have exhibited with the Forecourt artists and also with North East Open Studios.

I am a self-taught artist, and have worked with colour and paint since the age of fifteen.

I worked in the trade of painting, decorating and sign-writing until retirement at sixty-seven, running my own business for thirty five years.

I have painted in all media, and find that acrylics and pastels have been my forte for the last few years.

Most of my work is based on sky or sea backgrounds which I express myself to the full.

My most favored art I like to study is the Dutch school, especially work by Vermeer.

I am, a former President of the Forecourt Art Group, having held that position for eight years until 2011 with great pleasure.

I enjoy working in various media including acrylics, watercolour, and pen and ink, the latter often combined with watercolour washes.

I particularly enjoy painting the landscape of my native North East Scotland, whether depicting the natural environment or town-scapes.

I’ve shown my work in exhibitions organised by the Forecourt Art Group, in Aberdeen, Fyvie and Peterculter, and currently have a painting in an exhibition at a local oil company’s headquarters in Aberdeen.

In September 2009 my picture, Gamrie – Looking to Crovie  (in the gallery below) was a prize-winner at the New Pitsligo Visual Arts Exhibition.

My main interest is landscape and abstract painting and I work in a variety of mediums. I  followed a progression from watercolour, through oils and gouache, to acrylic and pastels. I enjoy painting in acrylic, partly because it is much quicker than oils and gives a similar finish. There are also  many mediums which can be added to obtain some wonderful glazes and finishes. I have recently been working in mixed media which is proving interesting and exciting.

My favourite medium is soft pastel for its versitility and purity of  colour. With pastel you can lay on pure colour in a painterly fashion, you can blend and overlay colour, and work up a painting to a highly finished and detailed standard. I mainly work on Art Spectrum paper which is similar to a medium sandpaper, and comes in a variety of background colours. This is a very durable paper which holds the pastel extremely well, and even allows the addition of partial underpainting in gouache or watercolour.

I have attended various workshops with Margaret Evans, an internationally known artist who features regularly in the International Artist magazine and who is a former SAA President.  I am a  member of the SAA, and also the Dundee Artists Society and have attended workshops with Fiona Haldane a renowned pastellist.

I have also attended various workshops with Colin Christie in Pitlochry and Birnam Arts centre, working in acrylic, oil and pastel.

Over the last few years I have sold paintings at the Cults- Milltimber Annual Festival, The Deeside Art Exhibition, The Forecourt Art Exhibitions, Dundee Artists exhibitions and the Milton Gallery in Banchory. I have also undertaken a few commissions but prefer to keep my painting more as a hobby.

Her favourite subject is animals, particularly wild animals which is seen from viewing her website www.lilytaylorart.com.  Travel to Africa frequently to visit her family gives her an ideal opportunity to photograph wild animals in their own environment and it is this that she reproduces in her art.  Her elder son who lives in Africa also sends her many photos of African wildlife giving her ample reference material.

Dogs and pets feature strongly in her portfolio also and this can also be seen by viewing her website under the heading “Commissions”.  Another hobby of Lily’s has been dog showing which she has done for 35 years during which time she bred several champions, is a dog show specialist and judges at Dog Shows all over the UK.  This hobby led to  her current business of Dog Grooming, where she has been so fortunate in being given Commissions from her clients.  Lily is quoted as saying “the expression on an owner’s face when they first view the finished portrait of their beloved pet is something that never leaves you and gives such satisfaction”.

Lily has had her work hung in The Milton Gallery, Country Frames Gallery, Hennies Gallery and this Spring/Summer is exhibiting 10 pieces in The Pitlochry Festival Theatre Gallery.  She has entered various exhibitions where she has sold work plus takes pleasure in being a member of 4 art clubs where she also exhibits and has been successful in selling her work.

I paint in oil (the thicker the better) and have had many influences over the years from Nancy Kominski and Van Gogh to the Scottish and Canadian Colourists. John Lowrie Morrison is my biggest influence at present.

I started by copying old masters and attending lots of Art Classes at Aberdeen College (Ruthieston Annexe) and Grays School of Art (night classes), where I quickly developed my own style of painting over the years.
My main tutor Phil Thain really encouraged me to develop and improve.

I have dabbled in Watercolours and was lucky enough to be taught by Joan Wilson.

Whilst at College one of my paintings was used in a calendar publication and I have been lucky enough to sell work which has gone on display in various Solicitors and Doctors premises in Aberdeen.

I have been exhibiting with the Forecourt Artists for around 25 years. I have also had 3 pieces of work accepted by Aberdeen Artists Society and exhibited at Aberdeen Art Gallery, where I also worked as an Attendant for many years, helping set up many exhibitions and delivering art all over the country. It was interesting and I learnt a lot working behind the scenes at many high profile exhibitions.

I am a very prolific painter and like to paint quickly, anxious to get my impressions on canvas. I have done hundreds of paintings over the years and try to keep track of where they end up. Some have gone as far as America, Belgium, Portugal, Germany and Canada,

After retiring I find I am painting even more than usual. In recent years I have experimented with building up Oil on paper mache to give a 3D effect and this style seems really popular.

I paint various subject matter- Landscapes, Seascapes, Harbour Scenes, Flowers etc.

I attend an art club at Cove (Loirston Annexe) every week. I think after all this time my wife is finally used to the mess and the smell of linseed oil and turpentine.

I attended Aberdeen College to study Graphic Design and achieved an HNC. My specialised subject was Children’s Illustration, which is still a big influence in my work today.

I had the most fantastically talented tutors- Jim Furneaux, Phil Thain and the late Donny Kelman (who first pointed out that I had developed my “own style” of intricate pen and ink work).

After college I worked as a T-shirt designer/screen printer before becoming self-employed, where I firstly had my own T-shirt Label “Cirrus Minor” which was influenced by Fantasy Art and Skate Culture.

After my son came along I ran my own business doing craft stalls and jewellery making for several years.

In 2000 I founded a Children’s Charity and now manage a successful Childcare Company. I enjoy using my skills running regular Competitions and Art Projects for the children.

I mainly work in Pen and Ink at the moment. I still do more traditional Landscapes and Flowers in Watercolour and Pastel on occasion and love exploring the countryside around Royal Deeside.

I have been with the Forecourt Art Group for over 20 years now and I am currently the Treasurer.

I launched 2 Online Galleries in 2008 and have had a fantastic response from the on-line artist community.

In 2008 and 2009 I won several competitions with Australian Site – Redbubble and had my work featured on a regular basis by forum Groups and Online Magazines.

Stop Press!
